Married to the Military

Our 5 year anniversary is coming up and I've been thinking a lot about what helps keep marriages strong. Although my husband is out of the military now, I'm still very close with those who are. When marriage goes right, it allows us to be stronger people together than we would be apart. Here are some important things to remember plus some links to other great posts about relationship advice. Do any of you have other advice? I'd love for you to share in the comment box below and I'm sure other readers would appreciate some words of wisdom!

1. Be understanding.
2. Surround yourself with caring helpful people whether it’s your family, military network, or friends
3. With deployments and a lot of time away from each other, don’t cheat!
4. Go to counseling. Either the two of you, or just you, or just you and your children. (I personally went to counseling during our deployment and after. I found it very helpful especially if you have a good person to talk to.)
5. Seek military resources and military networks to assist you and your family.
6. Learn how to efficiently pack your house and move - ugh I know some people are probably Master Movers by now!

{Homecoming} West Family

Welcome back

Rachel shares, "This Naval Station Norfolk, VA homecoming was amazing! The love between this family was so incredibly strong & oh so evident. Chaplain West is head over heels for his wife and boys and it was so difficult to hold back tears. This family is a sweet dear family to us and I was honored when Lori hired me to capture such a special moment for them! Hope you enjoy the previews as well as their YouTube video at the bottom of the photos."

{Engagement} Brittany & Kyle

Amber Craig of ACM Photography is a new photographer out of San Diego, CA. Her husband is a United States Sailor. She has shared a beautiful California engagment session that was taken at Liberty Station in Point Loma, CA.

Here is Brittany & Kyle love story, "Some things in life are just meant to be....and I truly believe Kyle and I are one of them. Kyle and I have quite the history. We've known each other and have been friends since the first grade. We have grown up together, as friends, but it was evident there was something much stronger between the two of us. Throughout high school Kyle and I had much of the same classes, were both very involved in sports, and had the same group of friends. My girlfriends used to tell me "he just looks at you differently than he does at us" or "ever notice he hugs you longer?" For me, that would be a dream come true. Kyle's kind heart and thoughtfulness was always something I loved about him, even when we were just friends. Little did I know Kyle felt the same feelings towards me. We never dated one another in high school, but I was ecstatic when Kyle asked me to be his date to the prom! As high school came to an end and we both started college, in Massachusetts for me and Maryland for Kyle, we always managed to stay in touch. Secretly, I knew deep down that no man I ever met would ever be like Kyle. Little did I know, Kyle felt the same way about me. He'd tell our guy friends that he knew some day we'd end up together. The summer before our senior year of college changed our lives forever. We were both at the beach with some friends when we both admitted how we felt about each other. Our next question was "what do we do now?" We started off dating long distance for a year, and after we both graduated college, we moved to San Diego where Kyle would begin his Navy career and I would begin my nursing career. I am so thankful every day to have him in my life. We're getting married on June 20, 2015. We've grown up together, and now we'll be growing old together. We couldn't be more excited and thankful for what the future holds for us!"

Thank you Amber for sharing their warm and sunny photos! And to Brittany for telling your love story, it reminds me of a Nicholas Sparks story <3

{Homecoming} Olson Family

Welcome back one of A Military Story's wonderful vendors Lauren Nygard Photography of Oceanside, CA. Recently, she photographed a homecoming for a Marine family that she is good friends with. His wife is a Civil Engineering Corps officer for the Navy and Lauren worked together with her at the ROICC (construction office) at Camp Pendleton. He was deployed in Bahrain for 6 months, and left behind their darling daughter. She has held down the home front while continuing to work at the ROICC and taking care of their sweet girl

Thank you Lauren for sharing these photos. The little girl's outfit is TOO CUTE and the handmade wreath at the end of this post is such a great idea!! To see more of this happy homecoming click here.

{Deployment} Weaver Family

Ying and Yang, right? Deployments and saying good-bye are part of being in the military and they're the flip side of the coin. So as much as I love happy homecomings I too like to share "see you later" deployments.

"Hello! My name is Nataly and I am the owner of MFD Photography (MemoriesForDave Photography). I am originally a Southern California family and wedding photographer but recently moved over to the east coast. I travel all of over the country for weddings and currently photograph families and couples in North & South Carolina. I had the pleasure of photographing the Weaver family on Valentines day of this year as they prepared to say "See you later". Here is a little about them:

Photographing this family is one of my favorite things to do, they are such an amazingly loving and adorable family… however, that wasn’t so much the case this day. Don’t get me wrong, I loved capturing these moments, but photographing a deployment is rough man! Especially when you can relate to those very feelings of having to watch your husband leave on one of those horrible white buses. It’s hard to focus your lens when your teary eyed!

It was such a crazy week for the Weaver family. We had a family session 6 days before Chris deployed and that very night Sam and Chris found out they were expecting baby #2! So, we obviously had to get together again for a quick announcement shoot! Chris deployed later that week on Valentines day (seriously, the irony). My heart ached for Sam and her baby boy, Davis, on this day but I was so happy to be able to capture some last minute laughs, moments full of joy, hugs and kisses!

I am already counting down the days to be able to photograph their homecoming (as I’m sure Sam is too!) later this year."

Thank you Nataly for sharing these photos and I'm sure everyone is excited for the homecoming!!
